Full Professor | PhD MSc BSc in Civil Engineering

Dr. Joan Ramon CASAS (Spain, 1960) got his 6-year program degree in Civil Engineering (1984) and his PhD (1988) in Construction Engineering from Technical University of Catalonia, UPC-BarcelonaTech (Barcelona, Spain). At this moment, he is Professor of Bridge Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering in Barcelona, UPC-BarcelonaTech (Spain). His area of expertise is Design, Construction and Management of Bridges and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) with main focus on Fiber Optic Sensors (FOS).

Founding member and Secretary General of IABMAS (International Association for Bridge Maintenance and Safety), since 1999, Vice-president of EUROSTRUCT (2017-2022), Chairman of Working Commission I on Structural Performance, Safety and Analysis of IABSE (2009-2013) and Vice-chairman of the same Commission from 2005 to 2009. Managing Editor for Europe and Associate Editor of the Journal STRUCTURE AND INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEERING, Associate Editor of the Journal of Bridge Engineering (ASCE) and Specialty Chief Editor of Frontiers in the Built Environment-Bridge Section.

Research Interest
Main field: Bridge Safety and Durability. Reliability-based Inspection and Management of Concrete Bridges. Bridge loading. Life-cycle assessment of structures.

Other fields: Concrete Bridge Design and Construction, Dynamic testing of bridges, Inspection methods and Structural Health Monitoring, Concrete Structures Repair and Strengthening.

Current research interests: Fiber Optic Sensors for Bridge Health Monitoring, AI for Bridge Damage Detection, Robustness and Redundancy of Concrete Structures, Live Load modelling applied to reliability and safety analysis of bridges, Bridge Management Systems, advanced non-destructive techniques in bridge evaluation, repair and strengthening of existing bridges with advanced materials, long-term performance and life-cycle analysis of bridges
Selected papers
Author or co-author of 39 books and chapters of books, 165 papers in refereed technical journals and over 400 communications to international scientific meetings. Participation in more than 100 consulting and advising works related with bridges for private companies and Public Institutions.
